Ngargee Tree St Kilda. Euro Yuroke. Boon Wurrung 2022
Original framed in oak wood. Unframed cotton canvas drop sheet with charcoal and chalk pastel.
The Red Gum Eucalyptus Tree Known as The Ngargee Tree, Holds deep associations to the people of St Kilda. It dates back hundreds of years and there are known stories that it has been used as an Aboriginal birthing tree, a place of gathering, of solace and prayer of celebration and more. One of my favourite stories is the recollection of early European settlers who were walking up St Kilda Rd from Melbourne City saw a huge plume of dust plummeting into the air. As they came closer, they could hear the sound of banging footsteps and realised it was an aboriginal Corrobboree said to be of 3000 people. My soul feels a sense of joy and protection every time I see or think of it.
In this artwork I decided to use black charcoal and white chalk pastel to capture the gnarly tree on the slight grittiness of the cotton canvas paint drop sheet. You can see quick white strokes of pastel to the right of the work highlighting the commercial buildings of St Kilda Rd.
